Preservation Pennsylvania is honoring excellence and innovation in preservation practice with the announcement of the recipients of the annual Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards. Twenty-four awards, representing projects and people across the state, were selected to receive recognition. The awards are presented annually by Preservation Pennsylvania, the commonwealth’s only statewide, private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to the protection of historically and architecturally significant places.
The F. Otto Haas Award, given to an individual or group for outstanding achievements in the field of historic preservation, will be presented to Brenda Barrett for her 40+ years of contributions to the field of historic preservation, conservation, and cultural resources. She was instrumental in structuring Pennsylvania’s first State Historic Preservation Office, and later helped establish the Pennsylvania Heritage Area program. She was the National Coordinator for Heritage Areas at the National Park Service and helped establish the Conservation Landscape Initiative at the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Her contributions to preservation are numerous, and her belief that preserving the tangible in our history helps to create a healthy society is at the core of her determination. Throughout her career and into retirement, she is a true champion of Pennsylvania’s history and heritage.
The Henry A. Jordan Award, which honors high achievement at the local level, will be presented to Historic Gettysburg Adams County Barn Preservation Project and Grant Program for encouraging and supporting preservation activities targeted at historic barns. This grassroots project to preserve historic barns in Adams County was founded in 1975. They provide education, lectures, workshops, tours, and demonstrations. The grant program provides a monetary incentive for owners to maintain, rehabilitate and preserve their barn. HGAC created the Adams County Barn Registry that lists 356 of an estimated 1500 barns.
